Rama along with Lakshmana, his younger brother, began to question Bharata, his brother who was devoted to elders (as follows):
राम ने अपने प्रिय भाई लक्ष्मण को सांत्वना दी और फिर उन्होंने अपने दूसरे भाई से प्रश्न पूछना शुरू किया।
"I desire to hear from you, why you have come tot his place in robes of bark and an antelope-skin."
यह क्या है जो तुम चाहते हो कि मैं सुनूँ, जो तुमने कहा है? क्योंकि तुम उस देश से आए हो जहाँ लंबे बाल और चमड़े के वस्त्र धारण किए जाते हैं।
"You ought to tell me all about the purpose for which you entered this place, clad in deer-skin and matted hair, relinquishing the kingdom."
यह श्लोक राजा दशरथ द्वारा भरत से पूछा गया है। भरत, तुम किस कारण से इस वन में आए हो? तुमने अपना राज्य छोड़कर यह कैसा वेश धारण किया है? तुम मुझे सब कुछ बताने के योग्य हो।
Thus questioned by the high souled Rama, by closely embracing him again, Bharata with joined palms answered as follows:
यह सुनकर महात्मा काकुत्स्थ (राम) के पुत्र (भरत) ने, बलपूर्वक हाथ जोड़कर पुनः यह वचन कहा।
"O, noble brother! Our father the mighty armed, after performing a deed must difficult to perform, and having abandoned us has gone the divine region; he died of grief on account of separation from his son."
पिता ने अपने पुत्र के वियोग से दुखी होकर, अत्यंत कठिन कार्य किया और स्वर्ग को प्राप्त हुए।
"O, tormented of foes! As urged by his wife and my mother Kaikeyi;, our father committed this great sin that has taken away his own reputation."
कैकेयी ने मेरी माता को नियुक्त किया, जो एक महान तपस्या थी। उसने यह महान पाप किया, जिसने उसके यश को हर लिया।
"Without having plucked the fruit of kingdom, widowed and emaciated with grief my mother will fall into the most terrific hell."
मेरी माँ, राज्य का फल प्राप्त किए बिना विधवा के दुःख से पीड़ित होकर, घोर नरक में गिरेगी।
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 101 · v8
तस्य मे दास भूतस्य प्रसादम् कर्तुम् अर्हसि |
अभिषिन्चस्व च अद्य एव राज्येन मघवान् इव || २-१०१-८
"Grant me, who am your true servant, a favour! This very day, as Indra the Lord of celestials himself, receive the royal anointing!"
हे भगवन, मुझ दास पर कृपा करें और आज ही मुझे इंद्र की तरह राज्यभिषेक करें।
"Grant all these people and these widowed Queens, who have come here to see you, this felicity!"
यह सभी स्त्रियाँ, जो विधवा हैं और माँ के समान हैं, आपके पास आई हैं। आपको उन पर कृपा करनी चाहिए।
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 101 · v10
तदा आनुपूर्व्या युक्तम् च युक्तम् च आत्मनि मानद |
राज्यम् प्राप्नुहि धर्मेण सकामान् सुहृदः कुरु || २-१०१-१०
"O, Prince! For that reason, accept the throne that is befitting; endowed to you as per succession and that is yours by right fulfill, as your should, the desires of your friends."
हे आत्मन्, उचित रीति से युक्त होकर, धर्म के मार्ग पर चलकर राज्य प्राप्त करो और अपने मित्रों को संतुष्ट करो।
"Bring the widowhood of the entire world to an end by becoming her Lord, as does the immaculate moon to the autumn-night."
हे पतिदेव, आपके द्वारा यह संपूर्ण भूमि विधवा रहित हो, जैसे शरद ऋतु की निर्मल रात्रि चंद्रमा से सुशोभित होती है।
"Grant this grace to your brother, who prostrates at your feet along with your ministers is both your discipline and your slave."
हे राजन, इन मंत्रियों के साथ, मैंने सिर झुकाकर आपसे प्रार्थना की है। आप मेरे भाई, मेरे शिष्य और मेरे दास पर कृपा करने के योग्य हैं।
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 101 · v13
तद् इदम् शाश्वतम् पित्र्यम् सर्वम् सचिव मण्डलम् |
पूजितम् पुरुष व्याघ्र न अतिक्रमितुम् उत्सहे || २-१०१-१३
"O, Tiger among men! You cannot disregard this unbroken kingdom, which is eternal, ancestral and honoured."
यह शाश्वत और पितरों से प्राप्त यह संपूर्ण मंत्री-मंडल है। हे पुरुष श्रेष्ठ, मैं इसका अनादर करने का साहस नहीं कर सकता।
Thus speaking, the mighty armed Bharata, with tears, once again seized Rama's feet in great honour, as per precept.
यह सुनकर, महाबली केकयी के पुत्र भरत ने, आँखों में आँसू भरकर, पुनः राम के चरणों को अपने सिर से छुआ।
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 101 · v15
तम् मत्तम् इव मातन्गम् निह्श्वसन्तम् पुनः पुनः |
भ्रातरम् भरतम् रामः परिष्वज्य इदम् अब्रवीत् || २-१०१-१५
Rama embraced his brother Bharata, who sighed again and again like an elephant in rut, and spoke as follows:-
भरत को देखकर राम ने, जो उस समय मदमस्त हाथी के समान लग रहे थे और बार-बार गहरी साँस ले रहे थे, उन्हें गले लगाकर यह कहा।
"How should a man of noble birth, rich in Sattva (goodness), dignified and who has observed sacred vows like myself, commit sin for the sake of a mere kingdom?"
कुलीन, गुणवान, तेजस्वी और सदाचारी व्यक्ति अपने राज्य के लिए पाप कर्म कैसे कर सकता है? ऐसा व्यक्ति ऐसा कभी नहीं करेगा।
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 101 · v17
न दोषम् त्वयि पश्यामि सूक्ष्मम् अप्य् अरि सूदन |
न च अपि जननीम् बाल्यात् त्वम् विगर्हितुम् अर्हसि || २-१०१-१७
"O, Bharata the annihilator of enemies! I do not see the slightest fault in you and you should not reproach your mother for a childish action."
हे शत्रुनाशक, मुझे तुममें कोई भी छोटा दोष दिखाई नहीं देता। माँ को बचपन से तिरस्कृत करना तुम्हें शोभा नहीं देता।
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 101 · v18
कामकरो महाप्राअज्ञ गुरूणां सर्वदानघ |
उपपन्नेषु दारेषु पुत्रेषु च विधीयते || २-१०१-१८
"O, Bharata the highly intelligent and the faultless man! It is incumbent always on the part of the elders to act freely with reference to their wives and progeny."
हे निष्पाप! बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति को चाहिए कि वह अपने धन का सदुपयोग करे, क्योंकि धन का उचित उपयोग पुत्रों और पत्नियों के भरण-पोषण में ही होता है।
"O, gentle brother! Since it was said thus by virtuous men in this world, we should all, women children and disciples, obey our Lord; this must be known to you."
हम लोक में साधुजनों द्वारा जैसे जाने जाते हैं, उसी प्रकार हे मित्र, तुम भी मेरी पत्नी, पुत्रों और शिष्यों को जानने के योग्य हो।
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 101 · v20
वने वा चीरवसनं सौम्यकृष्णाजिनाम्बरम् |
राज्ये वापि महाराजो मां वासयितुमीश्वरः || २-१०१-२०
"The great king is the master, who has a discretion either to make me reside in the forest, wearing bark robes and a black antelope skin or to sit on the throne, O gentle brother!"
वन में वृक्ष की छाल या मृगचर्म धारण करके रहने वाले को भी, या राज्य में राजा के रूप में रहने वाले को भी, मैं ही वास करने में समर्थ हूँ।
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 101 · v21
यावत् पितरि धर्मज्न गौरवम् लोक सत्कृते |
तावद् धर्मभृताम् श्रेष्ठ जनन्याम् अपि गौरवम् || २-१०१-२१
"O, excellent among the supporters of law and the virtuous! The same degree of respect is to be paid to our mother, as is due to our father, who is honoured by all."
जब तक पिता धर्मज्ञ और संसार में सम्मानित हैं, तब तक धर्म का पालन करने वालों में श्रेष्ठ व्यक्ति माता का भी आदर करते हैं।
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 101 · v22
एताभ्याम् धर्म शीलाभ्याम् वनम् गग्च्छ इति राघव |
माता पितृभ्याम् उक्तो अहम् कथम् अन्यत् समाचरे || २-१०१-२२
"How can I do otherwise, while both my parents of virtuous nature ask me to go to the forest?"
हे राम, इन दोनों धर्मशील पत्नियों के साथ वन को जाओ। माता-पिता ने मुझसे ऐसा कहा है, मैं और क्या कर सकता हूँ?
"It is for you to occupy the throne in Ayodhya that the world reveres and it is for me to occupy this Dandaka forest, wearing bark robes."
तुम्हें अयोध्या का राज्य प्राप्त करना चाहिए, जो लोगों द्वारा सम्मानित है। मुझे वल्कल वस्त्र पहनकर दंडक वन में रहना होगा।
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 101 · v24
एवम् कृत्वा महा राजो विभागम् लोक सम्निधौ |
व्यादिश्य च महा तेजा दिवम् दशरथो गतः || २-१०१-२४
"Having commanded thus, the emperor Dasaratha with a great splendour, made the division of duties in this manner (for us two) in the presence of the people and then ascended to heaven."
इस प्रकार कार्य करके, महान राजा दशरथ ने लोगों के सामने अपने राज्य का बँटवारा कर दिया और फिर वे स्वर्ग को चले गए।
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 101 · v25
स च प्रमाणम् धर्म आत्मा राजा लोक गुरुः तव |
पित्रा दत्तम् यथा भागम् उपभोक्तुम् त्वम् अर्हसि || २-१०१-२५
"That pious souled king, the preceptor of the world is the standard authority for you and you have to enjoy the share given by our father accordingly."
वह राजा, जो धर्म का प्रमाण है, आत्मा है, और लोगों का गुरु है, तुम्हारे पिता द्वारा दिया गया जो भाग है, उसे भोगने के तुम योग्य हो।
"I, for my part, shall enjoy the share given to me by our high-souled father for fourteen years, taking my abode in Dandaka forest, O gentle brother!"
चौदह वर्षों तक, हे सौम्य, मैं दण्डकारण्य में निवास करूँगा। मेरे महात्मा पिता द्वारा दिए गए इस भाग का मैं उपभोग करूँगा।
